Introducing the NH Golfs Project
I have a project to try to play every golf course in New Hampshire. The last time I checked there were 1,494 golf holes across 90 different venues in all of New Hampshire. Here’s my public spreadsheet of the courses in NH so people can suggest edits or use the data themselves.
As of this morning I had played 423 holes meaning I was 28.3% complete the project. I currently live in Concord, New Hampshire which is pretty convenient as a large percentage of the courses on the list are within 45 minutes of my house. I’m considering moving back to the Seacoast area, so I need to play the courses that are close to the center of the state while I still live close by.
When I first started trying to record every course I played in the state of New Hampshire I ran into a lot of trouble getting a good list. I wanted a format that was easy to copy into my own spreadsheet so I could run calculations around the total number of holes, the percentage I’ve completed, etc… I found a few different course directories, and started pulling that data into one comprehensive view.
After years of living here, what’s become obvious is that you don’t end up playing every course in the state by chance. It will take a lot of planning and intention. As people, no natter our hobbies, we tend to fall back into what’s familiar. I love lists because they force you off the beaten path. If you want to complete a challenge like hiking every 4,000 footer in New Hampshire, you will have to hike some mountains you might not have prioritized otherwise.
I drew a lot of inspiration from the idea of having a list and being able to slowly make progress toward a large goal - and that’s what I’m making public with NH Golfs. At its core it’s a list of every golf course in New Hampshire. I’m trying to play them all, and I hope you are too. I’m nowhere near done with the project, but here’s my workspace where I’ll share in the journey with everyone else who loves golf, loves New Hampshire, and wants to find a spirit of adventure in their home state.
